Ladies Gala Day - Friday, 17th October 2025
With the sun shining, from the moment you walked through the gate it was a day to renew friendships, make new friends and just enjoy. Our ladies as always excelled - smiles abounded and hugs were on offer. The day started with a welcome breakfast and lovely fruit punch (enjoyed by all). A special mention to our Match Committee without whom we would not have had this day, Events Committee for making the clubhouse and raffles so attractive, Kitchen Committee who once again gave us an excellent lunch and afternoon tea, our bar ladies, everyone who made goodies for our cake stall in fact just everyone who helped make the day so wonderful.

11th October 2025 - Kelli Wray Coaching Clinic
44 of our members spent the day with Kelli Wray who imparted her extensive bowling knowledge and worked both individually and in groups with us to provide strategies to be successful on and off the Green. She explained the role of the different positions within the team and also presented ideas about team tactics and how they can be used effectively to achieve the ultimate goal of winning. There was time spent on the green to try out the suggestions that Kelli had made. A very informative and enjoyable day!

20th Sept 2025 - 40th Anniversary of Willetton Bowling Club
The evening was attended by around 80 people including dignitaries Dr Jags Krishnan MLA, Member for Riverton, (also Patron of Willetton Bowling Club), Mayor of City of Canning, Patrick Hall, Councillor of City of Canning (Beeliar Ward), Paul Tucek JP, Councillor of City of Canning (Beeliar Ward), Shen Sekhon , MBA, BA, and Hon Dr Mike Nahan MLA, Former Member for Riverton, (and previous Patron of Willetton Bowling Club).
Club member, Alan Walters, MCd the evening. After addresses by Dr Jags and the Mayor, Life Member Ray Mansfield shared the club’s history. His stories brought to life the early struggles, the determination of members to fundraise for facilities, and the way government agencies supported those grassroot efforts. It was a real reminder that with the collective effort of volunteers and a strong community spirit, clubs like ours can not only survive but thrive for generations.

Eight Past Presidents attended the evening and were presented with a commemoration brooch for their service to the Club by Vice-President, Marg Berson.

A parade of uniforms worn over the past 40 years followed with the new season uniform including new logo, and the unveiling of the new club flag.

Martin Buckland (the newest member of the Club in attendance) blew out the candles of the Anniversary cake.

Current and past members enjoyed a wonderful evening. The Club wishes to thank and acknowledge the City of Canning for their grant support of this event.

10th September 2025 - Well done to our member, Ken Monkhouse "Monkey", who played in the National Arm Bowling Championships in Tasmania in September, with the WA team finishing 4th overall, the highest ever, bringing home trophies after defeating NSW for the first time and also Tasmania. Ken not only had a great time but great success with his bowling!

4 September 2025 - Final of the Ladies 2 Bowl Singles. The Major was played between Sue Bartels and Judy Fenner, a close game with Sue coming out the victor and for the Plate Ricki Phillips played Sue Freeth which came down to the last end before Ricki triumphed. 30 August 2025 - Saturday 4 A Side Hidden Pairs - A great turnout to enjoy the day of bowls in the sunshine. Unfortunately, the winner of the Member's Draw, John Wood, was not present so make sure that you come on down to the club next Saturday by 1.15pm for a 1.30pm start for our standard mixed social bowls. It is only $5 entry fee to play for this week, and any member of the club has a chance to win the $100 Member's Draw but remember you must be present to accept the winnings! The draw usually takes place around 5.30pm so if you don't play you can always just pop in for a drink.

14th August 2025 - Ladies Winter Scroungers Semi Finals and Final followed by Season Opening Lunch
The morning may have been somewhat chilly and windy but the sun shone and the spectators were treated to some very good bowling by our six finalists - Sue Bartels, Rhonda Porter, Pat Willans, Sue Freeth, Judy Fenner, Ricki Phillips - to all of whom we must say very well done for reaching this stage.
After two close games, Judy and Rhonda emerged as the grand finalists. Four ends later we had our winner for this year - Judy Fenner - CONGRATULATIONS!!
The game was followed by our season starter lunch and as always the ladies produced lovely food and lots of it.

9th August 2025 - It was just as well the Committee made the call yesterday to cancel the 5 A Side event to be held today as the forecast rain has really arrived and the greens are flooded! It would have been a swimming event!
But don't despair, it has been rescheduled for next Saturday, 16th August and there are a few places available so if you are interested contact Justin Wright on 0427 936 345.

Our Greens Chairperson, Trevor Williams, has been extra busy this last week or so readying the grounds and greens for our 5-a-side carnival to be held on Saturday, 9th August. Trevor and his son were out early one morning in the freezing cold weather loading up all the old timber removed from the backs of the greens into the skips together with old lockers and later in the week Trevor and his helpers Dave Reynolds, Steve Clayton and Rick Schmidt spent hours line marking the greens. Thank you, guys, without you we could not run these events!

We wish Justin Wright all the very best over the next couple of weekends as he participates once again with his bowls partner Chris Carruthers (from Safety Bay) in the PBA event in Mandurah. They have both won this competition previously and as a result, represented Australia in the UK in March 2024.

The aim of the PBA (Professional Bowls Association) is to promote and develop Professional Bowls worldwide and in doing so, foster, safeguard and encourage the game of bowls at all levels. It was formed in 1997 by bowlers worldwide.

Good luck Justin!
Congratulations to Ken Monkhouse (“Monkey”) who has been selected in the 2025 WA State Bowling Arm side. The team will play in the 11th National Bowling Arm Sides Championship which will be held at Warrnambool, Victoria in September. All six States will participate in this 5-A-Side event and Bill Taylor, WASABA Chair, believes the WA side to be one of the strongest seen to date. Well done Ken!!!

The Mount Lawley Men’s Master’s Singles event was held on 16 -18 May and a few of our members played. An outstanding effort by Josh Calyun who, after facing some very difficult opponents, reached the semi-finals. So proud of you Josh!!!

Josh also joined Cameron Girvan, Gavin Dodge, Justin Wright and Trevor Thompson (who subbed for Justin on the 2nd day) in the HiltonPark 4’s Classic in May.
They won the event, playing through the two days undefeated. Congratulations!
In April, the Osborne Park Bowling Club held a 2nd Division and Under Singles and Pairs tournament.
Our very own Kelvin Ruffell won the Singles event. A wonderful achievement Kiwi! Well done ….

At our recent Presentation Night, congratulations go to two bowlers who won the
Encouragement Award (Lorraine Brooks) and the Roy Scarfe Award (Kevin Creed).

What a wonderful pennant season we have had. A big thankyou to a number of our men who stepped up and played for the Tuesday ladies when we were short of players. Some of them joined the ladies at the Pennant Wind-up held at the Swan Yacht Club recently. What a great turn-out!
